A root canal is an endodontic treatment that involves numbing the mouth and removing the infected area of the tooth. Patients then receive a filling to repair the tooth. After root canal treatment, you need to be careful what you eat to avoid problems. For instance, the initial root canal filling is only temporary, meaning it is less secure and may come dislodged. Eating the right things will also avoid discomfort and damage to the tooth that would require additional dental procedures.
What to Eat Immediately After Root Canal Treatment
A few hours after your root canal, your mouth will still be numb; however, you may be hungry. You need to consider what you eat. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing — this will prevent you from accidentally biting your lips, gums, cheeks, or tongue. You should also steer clear of hot foods or beverages (which could burn you if you fail to notice the numbness of your mouth) and alcohol, which can increase bleeding. Finally, eat on the side of your mouth that did not receive the treatment and chew slowly.
What to Eat in the Following Days
While you still have a temporary filling, you need to adapt your diet to protect your tooth. Continue eating soft foods such as:
Fruits, including bananas, mangos, pears, peaches, applesauce, and fruit smoothies
- Rice pudding
- Yogurt, milkshakes, and ice cream, free from chunks and nuts
- Tuna salad
- Mashed vegetables, like potatoes and cauliflower
- Oatmeal and cream of wheat
- Pasta and noodles
What to Avoid
Until you receive a permanent filling or crown, avoid anything crunchy, hard, or chewy, including hard fruits and vegetables, bread, and gum. Also stay away from spicy foods, as these may cause you discomfort.
